In communication part, my core competency & facet is acquire, interpret and present information, I can present information clearly and in an organized way, the proof is I wrote down my everyday plan before the test. My goal for moving forward is making more communication and sharing more opinions with classmates, I will be positive whenever we have a group work to make this happen.
In thinking part, my core competency & facet is develop and design, I can experiment with different ways of doing things, the explanation is I thought a new way to solve our problems when we faced with the difficulty during the group work. My goal for moving forward is build on other’s ideas and add new ideas of my own, the method that I will solve this problem is discuss with my partners and think on others’ side.
In personal & social part, my core competency & facet is solving problems in peaceful ways, I can solve some problems myself and can identify when to ask for help, the evidence is when we do the group work, I can finish my work well and on time. My goal for moving forward is contribute to group activities that make my classroom, school, community, or natural world a better place, how I will make this happen is be more responsible to our community .
An analysis of Chris Madden’s cartoon reveals important message about which deforestation is a human error. Through this image, readers can see two lumberjacks are standing on the side, a large number of trees are cut down in front of them, they are discussing and laughing about the next step of this forest. The wordplay “LOGGING LOG” on the picture has two meanings, one is their plan of cutting trees, another is they are sharing a diary about logging because they think it is a flamboyant thing. The whole cartoon shows deforestation in order to satirize people’s stupid behaviour, the author was a satirical tone to expose people’s indifference about nature and tree’s life, and they are essentially mercenary and selfish. We can clearly observe relative size as an ret technique, as the cartoonist has made the people bigger and the trees thinner. Under this comparation, we can understand the cruelty of people and the fragility of trees. All in all, the cartoon was exposed and criticized deforestation and appeal to people to protect the environment.
What would you do if your house was to be destroyed? Bruce Cockburn is an artist who emphasizes on saving the forests. Many people are turning a blind eye towards deforestation of rain forests, despite the terrible consequences. In “If a Tree Falls”, diction, imagery and sarcasm highlight the theme of deforestation.
Diction shows how people are turning a
cold shoulder towards deforestation of the rain forest. Diction is word choice
to create the mood in the song. The lyric writer uses the word “green brain “(48), and this
brain are “facing
lobotomy” (48). Perhaps
, the image of “green brain” (48) refers to
the image of rain forest , which contain a large number of natural resources ,
especially trees which have photosynthetic function in order to reduce carbon
dioxide and produce oxygen . It also means forestry industries cu up vast parts
of forest to take advantages. If deforestation is not stopped, and people keep
ignoring also destroying the brain of the earth, the whole body or all others
parts on the earth also everything belonging to it will be in hazardous. Not
only choosing the word “green brain” to support the
theme of the song , but Cockburn also created the word “cortege” (48) in order
to make the theme of the song stand out . “Cortege” is the image
of people walk sadly at the funeral saying bye to the people with bad luck. A
large number of trees are cut down in the rain forests, and those trees fall
down on the ground sound like a rhythm. This rhythm has a sense of cortege
which is full of sadness. In addition, the word “cortege”
once again suggests the death of the rain forests because of excessive
deforestation while not recovering them. At the end of the “rhythm”, it could be
an extinction for every living being, and we are perhaps going “to disappear
forever” (48). Diction
really works on making consider about the earth’s future, and it also shows the consequences of the
ceaseless deforestation and the indifference of people to the earth.
The third literary device used to
support the theme deforestation is sarcasm. The writer uses sarcasm to gather
the reader’s attention
and help them realize the negative effects of deforestation. Sarcasm is humor
that is not serious but is meant to mimic; therefore, the writer uses this
method to make people feel bad about what is happening to rain forests. In
stanza four, the writer says,”cut and move
on”. Showing how
people are acting towards rainforests. When he says ‘’ cut and move
on’’, it sounds
like he does not care but the main message is that people should stop
deforestation. The writer also says “what kind of
currency grows in these new desserts.”
It looks like he is supporting people who cut down trees fro money but
he is trying to say that deforestation has more negative effects than earning
money. These two maples of sarcasm from the poem prove that sarcasm supports
the theme of deforestation.
To sum up, diction, imagery and sarcasm
are three literary devices that support the main idea of people’s nonchalance
about deforestation. According to the song”If a Tree
Falls”, people take
a lesson from protection of environment has no time to delay.
There is no doubt that some fakes news spread online even though cause heated discussion by some malicious people. A group photographs which reflect a different atmosphere between were posted online in previous years, the Russian president Vladimir Putin is pilling American president Obama’s tie in this picture, which seems to have conflict between them. Actually, according to Snopes this controversial photo was taken by Peter Souza, White House photographer, on 6 June 2014 in Normandy, France, various world leaders joined a meeting in order to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day (https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/putin-obama-tie-pull/). We can see clearly different between the true photograph and the fake photograph, which is a carefully photoshopped image.
At the beginning, people may just make fun for the two presidents, this picture has been spread from 2016; however, it was not until 2018 that the picture was discovered again by Donald John Trump’s followers for another reasons, these people post this picture again in order to build up the momentum for Trump’s president election. To start with, citizen believed these kind of news were true because Russia and America have had contradiction for a long time, under the malicious propaganda and guidance of some people, although this picture has been turned out to be false for many times, a part of people still believe. People want to believe due to their crowd mentaily and curiosity, they concern about leaders life and think these things are far from them.
Setting
goals is a good way to shorten and simplify the course of our efforts , so I
list ten valuable ways for setting goals .
Understand myself as much as possible
First , understanding myself is a necessary step for choosing goals , I am the most familiar person to myself ,so I know my strength and weakness as well as dream and hobby. I need to use these characteristic to finish setting goals . For me , my advantage is science department , and I had a clear plan for my future when I was very young so that I can do plan earlier . My disadvantage is communication because I am a little shy so that I will not choose a job like salesperson in the future.
2 Consider a perfect future
Thinking and describing a beautiful picture for the future will help me a lot because I am a girl who loves fantasy , imagining I travelling around the world will not only give me motivation to work hard for it but also give me a explicit dream , this will help me to setting objective .
3 Choose a person who I admire
Idol is force who can make us stronger , although family and friends can also give us encouragement , it is different with idol , a great idol can be the reference of setting goals and give us a direction of effort . For me , my idol is Lin Huiyin , an architect , who is famous for her grace and contribution , I admire because her insistence on architecture , even though I can not be as successful as her , I also want me to have the same character like her .
4 Know my motivation
Everyone must have their motivation may be
someone or something we are willing to work for , it can be family , success or
money . There is no doubt that my parents is my biggest motivation in my life .
When I have not have a clear goal for the future , my aim was not let my
parents disappeared , despite of the fact that I grow up , my parents thinking
is also very important for me , but I am lucky that my parents are proud of me
.
5 Have a good plan
Making plans can make our goals become specific , if we can list things that we have to do and we want to do everyday , we can be ready for that and achieve that step by step . I prefer to making plans to not before my exam or holiday , I enjoy the process that I make my confusing mind become clear , it will remind me when I am lazy because each goals will influence the whole plan .
6 Separate big goal to small goal
Big goal is like a dream of life , it is so
big for everyone , we may think it is so hard to come true so that we give up
on the half ; consequently , smaller goals which are easier to achieve are
necessary . I have a big aim for five years , but five years are too long to
make plan , so I separate them to ten six-month periods , I always make the
plan at the beginning and reflect myself on the end . The happiness and pride I
gain when I complete the small goals will not less than achieving the big
targets .
7 Find a partner
A person’s journey is always lonely and we
may face kinds of difficulties during process of achieving goals , this remind
us to find a partner , maybe we have different goals but we can support and
encourage each other all the time . When I am lazy or dilatory , I really hope
someone can remind me and we can improve together , so it reflect how important
a partner is for setting goals .
8 Reward and encourage myself
It is very important because we can not be
hard-working all the time , achieving dreams also need relax ourselves . Reward
might not be an expensive object , it can be a big meal , a dream trip or a
popular movie . After I achieve a small goal , I prefer to have a few day
holiday , which I can eat favorite food but have high calories , I can stay at
home for the whole day just read a novel on the bed . We need to set a
encouragement which we will be full of power just think about it .
9 Have a good start
A good beginning means the half done , setting
goals is the start of achieving dream , if we set a good target , we will be more
relax on our rest effort process , so we also need a good start for setting
goals . My usual habit is to find a piece of clean paper and a clear afternoon
, write down all my goals neatly on the paper , sometimes I will copy them again
just want to have a good start .
10 To do it immediately
Do not put off our plan anytime , when we decide
to do it tomorrow means we can not finish most of time . Before , I always play
my phone first and do my goals second , but now I prefer to do the plan first
then have a rest . I believe it will make me feel better during the rest when I
set goals at the beginning .
All in all , I have already had my gaol which is become a successful architect and design my own library in the future , I believe if I keep this methods which are very important to me , I will set more successful goals
I believe that friendship means a lot to everyone , so do I . We can share our secret and get warm from each other, friendship is a different and there is no emotion can replace it .
One of my
most indispensable friends plays an important role in my growing process , we
met each other from birth due to our parents relationship . He is tall and
thin, he is outgoing and love laughing. Sometimes he is a brave boy who always
protect me when we were in danger, sometimes he is a lovely boy because he told
jokes to make me happy , but most of the time he is a “disagreeable” friend who
always play tricks with me . Even though we made arguments everyday, we were
always best friend to other. In addition, we went to the same kindergarten and
primary school, we had another layer of classmates and studied together after
school. what memories impressed me the most is we had a secret base where was a
abandoned warehouse near my house, the first time when we discovered that, we
felt very excited. We found and picked lots of objects that we normally value
to our secret base , we put plenty of thought in decorating there and asked
friends to come and play games with us. We shared secrets and we trusted each
other completely.
Although we do not live in the same city and have not see each other for a long time, our friendship will not decrease because of the distance and time.
Do you know
racism ? Have you ever been treated racism ? Racism , a disgusting social
phenomenon , has always existed around the world . Because some people like the
whites consider they are more superior than others, many first Nations people
have been subjected to unfair just due to their dark skin for many years . In
Dawn Dumont’s short story “We’ll Take The White One”, symbolism of colour ,
animal imagery and diction are used to illustrate what the First Nation People
have suffered in Canada .
First of all , Dumont used symbolism of colour
to support racism in the short story . According to different skin colours ,
racists separated people into two groups in subjected way . In the boarding
school , while students were used to talking with people of the same race and
thinking the Natives were invisible , the word “ a veil of air “ (272) is like
a racial block between them . If someone is born in aboriginal family but have
a light skin , they will also be more comfortable and thought highly because of
their colours , the man said ,” I could have married this white RCMP officer
“(263) and “now she stood a chance being picked”(267) use to describe the fair
skin sister . In this case , Dumont
indicate light skin people will have more choices consequently , these make
some people are proud of themselves and make light of the Natives , and
narrator expound the prejudice of skin colours through the symbolism of colour
.
The second
literary device which supports the subject of racism is animal imagery , and
narrator regarded First Nation children as animals by using the word
“tail”(264), Men is not an animal without a tail , but Dumont imagined them
were animals under the cruel society the narrator came up with this idea
because the First Nations people have no privileges like citizens and live in
bad surrounding , Moreover “through and various types of animal shit to look at
the car and the couples more closer “(264) . The words “animals” and “couples”
directly divide them into two world even though two specials , it contains a
strong sense of contempt and disrespecting of the dark-skin people . Through
the animal imagery , the narrator show us the subject of the racism .
Secondly, imagery is being used as one of the literary devices that describes the theme of deforestation. Imagery helps create an image in the reader’s mind that shows how rain-forest are being exploited and how devastation by greed corporations is destroying them. The writer uses “busy monsters eat dare in the spirit world” (48). The “busy monster” allude the heavy machinery used by corporations to bring down the rain-forest and “dark holes” to results of the corporations destruction in the rain-forests leading to dry land and extinction of rare species. The drastic effects of this contribute to climate change, and a spirit world of rare species that leaves the real world in disaster and sorrow.
Last but not least , the theme of the racism appears many times in the form of diction . The word “jail”(276) is atypical examples , school built “the holding cell”(276), a room of the jail , to control students like Malcolm and Nathan . Actually , did not have to do like that because the whole world of the Natives’ life including home and school are like jails , they had no freedom “it was illegal to leave the reserve without a permit “(263), there is nothing worse than living in a controlled environment , they cannot revolt even though in their own area . In addition , the “abuse”(269) they suffered in school also illustrate racism , Dawn’s dad hid in a broom closet in order to escape bully (268) ; Dawn’s mother always went hungry and were only able to see her parents once a year (270) . There are thousand of aboriginal students as victims who have suffered there unfair activities , Diction is really an effective way to expose the racism .
In
conclusion , symbolism of colour ,animal imagery and diction are three literary
devices that directly show the main topic of the racism . Through this story ,
we can feel how disgusted the racism is , and what the narrator wanted to
express perhaps is the wish that one day discrimination will be eliminated .
Like all country have a national day to celebrate their establishment of an independent and complete state , Canada also has that day called Canada day in July first every year , this is almost the most important holiday for a country . According to Wikipedia , Canada Day first appeared in 1867 and finally changed to this name in 1982 . Because Canada was under British rules at the beginning and just had three provinces , so it was not officially celebrated until it became a fully independent country . During the process of change the name of national day , there were lots of arguments . A part of people thought the name change was a symbol of freedom from colonization , while people that disagreed considered traditional problems . Nowadays , citizens and government will hold some activities to celebrate Canada day , such as parade , fireworks and concert . In addition , China also has a national day on October first every year , which has already been set up for seventy years . Although China has already existed for thousands of years , the new China was founded after a period of colonial rule , because of that sad history , we will cherish the present life more . The national day is one of the most important festivals in China , we have seven-day holidays which is the longest one except winter and summer holiday . In that day , many people hurry to capital to watch the flag-raising ceremony , and we have a grand military parade in Tiananmen square .
In my mind ,
the national day is not only the day for celebration , but also let us remember
how difficult our countries were founded and treasure our reality .
Nowadays our environment is being destroyed , the governments try their best to protect environment , but I believe that the best way is to start from ourselves , so I list some ways which I promise I can do to sustain our surrounding in my daily life . First of all , I think I will reduce using natural resources like water . Although we cannot live without water , I will turn off the tap whenever I do not use water during brush teeth or take shower , in addition to decrease times of using baths . Second , reusing articles of daily use is also I will do to reduce waste . Take plastic bags for example , I will keep on bringing bags when I go shopping just like I did before . If sometimes I take plastic bags home , I will keep them and reuse them like for garbage bags . What’s more , I wish I can do some volunteer activities to recover our environments . I pay close attention to a challenge on website , which is asked people to clean up a small polluted area by themselves . It is such a rewarding challenge so that I wish I can do in holiday . Last but not least , recycling can make positive development in environmental protection . Although we cannot take the responsibility like the government , we can sort our household garbage well and put them in the right trash can . Overall , save the earth is like save our lives , so let us do together !
After reading the article “ The Recycling Crisis” that comes from The Week.com , I generate deeper understand about the effects of recycling objects on environmental protection . In the past, China took the responsibility of recycling garbage from some developed countries and recreated them to new products; hence, people did not realise how important the recycle is. After China refused to accept those rubbish, the American government need to think another solutions .It is necessary to identify the categories of garbage in any country, it is not only because those garbage would contaminate the environment like plastic pollution of the sea, but also we can reuse litter like iron, in order to reduce wasting natural resources. Even though recycle is a good way to protect our surrounding, but it is not an efficient method. If we want to deal with the root problem, many experts think reduce waste is a good way. In my opinion , achieve the goal that do not waste anymore need to start from ourselves , start the little things around you and keep going ,we must can recover our nature one day.
Plastic is a kind of material that can not decompose naturally, many animals were deeply hurt by them, so if we can refuse to use plastic things and appeal to people around us to use environmental friendly objects in our daily life, we are able to take part in safeing environment. Protecting the world is not one person’s responsibility , it need we work together .
